Baby Signs

I'm so interested in using sign language when DomerBaby arrives. It came up on a message board today, and some of the girls who started around 4 months had the babies signing back at 6mo! How cool is that?

Apparently, teaching a baby to sign can also help language learning and increase IQ.

Here is a neat site that shows ASL signs for babies.

I'll have to look into it more, but if anyone has tips and tricks, please post a comment!

I'd also really like to expose DomerBaby to at least one other spoken language during the first year, but I haven't quite figured out how to do that on a regular basis yet. One thing at a time!

No children but I babysat a boy (15 months-28 months) that used sign language. Honestly, I think he relied on it too much, as he was still speaking less than 10 words when I left (which I think was more related to other things). I also babysat a set of twins (same age) during law school, and one was pretty delayed due to being extremely premature. His language instructor introduced sign language during the time I kept them, and it really helped him start communicating. It was cute because his twin would communicate with him using the sign language for book, more, drink, etc. The mother was told to sign and speak words together. Without rambling much more, I think it is a great to introduce language and communicating if limited (i.e. you should expect a normal 2 year old to say more instead of signing it), and I definitely want to use it with our children.

Hi Jen, hope you are feeling better. I had heard of caffeine for a headache but caffeine isn't really good for anybody, so I have no suggestions, other than I heard a pretty name yesterday, Genevieve. I told Grandpa C. about some of my name suggestions and his suggestion was that I run names by him before I submit them to you guys, hence, he didn't like some of my choices. I'll be glad when you pick one or two so that I can take my thinking cap off, hahaha!!!

PS I think learning any languages is great, sign, or otherwise, and the earlier the better. The site was interesting too!

I've had some experience with signing with children in daycare centers that I used to work at it and it's wonderful! I hope it works out well for you!
