Doctor Update

I decided to call the doctor and see if she would agree with trying to feed Joseph more often and high calorie/fat things for a month to see how he progressed with his weight. She agreed, so now we're on

OPERATION CHUNKY MONKEY!

Give me your best ideas for (reasonably) healthy high fat, high calorie foods. Here's what we do so far on the high fat/calorie end of things:

whole milk yogurt
bananas
avocados
cheese
hummus
tofu
red meat
sweet potato
butter/olive oil

Things I'm thinking of adding in:

whole milk (cow)
heavy cream (either whipped w/ a small amount of sugar or to supplement milk)
ice cream (though I hate the idea - which was why I liked the heavy cream idea better)
bacon???
banana bread/muffins

I tried hot dog last night and today, but Joseph wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole. Also, I need to still get some healthy fruits and veggies in him, without filling him up too much. If you have ideas on that (especially green veggies) please post in the comments or send me an email!

Could he eat any of these?

Cottage Cheese
Pudding made with whole milk
Peanut butter

Dr. said no peanut butter until he's 2 y/o... Cottage cheese and pudding are good ideas, though!

I thought the PB may be a no no.
How about shelled edamame for a snack?

My coworker gave her young son ice cream at her pedi's recommendation. She said it helped! A small bowl every night did the trick for him. You could always buy organic!

Love that you're trying this approach. Been reading, found mostly what you already have, plus maybe coconut milk (suppose to be very high in calories), adding brewers yeast or protein powder to yogurt or ice cream shakes, full fat cream cheese on an egg bagel, pasta with lots of butter and parmesan cheese on top and ice cream mixed with half and half. Ok, now I am starving, off to the frig!!! I have some ice cream that has my name on it...hmmmm, maybe with some whipped cream on top!

I've heard good things about brewer's yeast but I don't have any experience with it myself.

We are waiting on peanut butter as well, but use soy butter currently. Not all groceries have it, but if they do it is with the peanut butter.

I LOL'd at Bacon. I'm just a lurker, but avocado is excellent for healthy fats and you can't go wrong with whole milk (organic of course) I think I remember reading you have been feeding him egg yolk, you could always cook it in real butter and my son loves toast with real butter on it. Real butter is full of fat. Whole milk yogurt would be good too.

PB is a no-no until the age of 2, maybe 3 because of allergies. Actually all nut products are a no-no until then.

Good luck with operation fatten up.

creamed spinach? and lots of cheese?

Whitney March 14, 2010 at 4:47 PM

we do a lot of things in cheesy sauce. I make a creamed chicken and broccoli with white cheesy sauce that W LOVES. He's also a big fan of the Whole Foods breakfast sausages which are calorie dense. Scrambled eggs w/ cheese are also a big hit. Basically, W eats anything with cheese.

ooh - and greek yogurt. LOTS of fat and protein.
